In 1987 three friends, all with young families, got together to form North Berwick Swimming Club. At that time North Berwick had an outdoor pool by the harbour which was used during the summer months. To continue swimming during the winter months the founder members campaigned to the Local Authority for use of other local towns' indoor swimming pools. As a result they swam at Tranent, Musselburgh and Haddington for eight years. During these years Saturday mornings were spent fund-raising so that the swimmers could travel to the pools by bus. .

The Club was instrumental in campaigning for an indoor pool which was opened in 1996, a year after the outdoor pool was closed.

Since it's beginning in 1987 the Club has gone from strength to strength.

From starting off with an hour every Wednesday evening, the Club now operates for an hour on Mondays and for four hours on Wednesdays during school term times.

The Club has always been self organised and has been managed by a dedicated group of volunteer parents. The Club's team of volunteer teachers have a good knowledge of swim teaching between them; some have ASA accredited qualifications, others have followed short courses which have been organised by the Club.

As one of the founder members put it:

The aim of the three friends was to teach and promote swimming building up stamina and improving strokes so that the children and adult members of the North Berwick Club Swimming Club now an for the rest of their lives.
